Enjoying Troegs Javahead Stout fresh from the fermentor with Jason.
It is hard to believe the first Month of the quest is now complete. April was a very good month visiting
30 Breweries in 3 states. Which is 10% of the goal in both categories. So you non-believers beware, I am currently ahead of schedule to reach 300.
After spending the first week in Asheville ,NC, I made a quick trip to Morgantown, WV and visited Morgantown Brewing and Mountain State Brewing, both located in the Waterfront Area. Morgantown Brewing had the larger selection of house brews. My favorites were the Alpha Blonde, Zack Morgan's IPA and Coal City Stout. Mountain State had four brews with Coal Miner's Daughter Stout being the best.
I ventured to South Central PA during the last week of April. The first stop was Troegs Brewery located next door to Hershey Park. If you plan to be in the Area this is a must stop, be sure to schedule a tour before hand. The tours are popular and can fill up fast. I highly recommend trying to get in Jason's tour group, he was great. We had the opportunity to taste Java Head Stout out of the Fermenter and a bottle of sunshine Pils pulled right off of the bottling line. Oh yes Mad Elf was there for the tasting. After the guided tour and tasting we moved into the very large bar and tasting room area to enjoy more Troegs Beer. they also offered three different scratch beers to try and give feedback on.
Moving on to Lancaster County, I soon discovered the home to the Amish also has many breweries in the towns between the farms. Each brewery offered a unique experience and you can not go wrong with visiting any one of them. This blog is already getting too long so I will just highlight a few of my personal favorites.
Well its Time to Tackle May, lets see where the Beer quest takes me next...........stay tuned.

- Iron Hill Brewery has many locations in Southeastern PA. We visited the Lancaster Brewery and were very fortunate to have Jill for our server. Her knowledge of beer was second to none, be sure to try Pig Iron Porter, Hippie vs Punk and Abbey Dubbel. Great food and you have to try the sweet potato fries with the dipping sauces ( bourbon vanilla, my favorite)
- St. Boniface located in Ephrata, PA. A small nano brewery with a very small serving area in front of the brew works. Great atmosphere, good beer talk and great beer. you have to have the 3lb. IPA, Libation imperial IPA and Hegemoney Imperial Stout.
- Snitz Creek in Lebanon, PA. ( OK.. I know, I'm not in Lancaster Co. now) Opened about ten months ago, nice rustic beer drinking bar with a very friendly and knowledgeable beer server Matt. I had a nice visit with Brewer Jason, he is brewing some very nice beer. I particularly enjoyed the Wholly Bugger Black IPA, Opening Day IPA and the Vanilla Porter. Be sure to try the grilled cheese sandwich with Lebanon Bologna. Did I mention their Opera Fudge, try it with the Brown Trout stout or the Vanilla Porter.
